Swine Breed Characteristics Guidelines:

Berkshire

• A black and white animal with erect ears exhibiting Berkshire characteristics
• A Berkshire must have white on all four (4) legs, face, and tail, unless the tail is docked. One (1) of the white leg points may also be missing.
• A Berkshire must NOT have a solid white or solid black face from the ears forward
• A Berkshire must NOT have a solid black nose - rim of nose
• White is allowed on the ears, but NO solid white may appear
• An occasional splash of white may appear on the body

Chester White

• Must possess Chester White breed characteristics
• Must be solid white in color, no color on the skin larger than a silver dollar, no colored hair
• Any skin pigmentation, other than white, that exceeds five (5) in number is disqualified
• Ears must be down and medium size
• Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification

Duroc

• Must be red in color and possess Duroc breed characteristics
• Ears must be down and medium size
• Must NOT have any white or black hair on the animal
• Must NOT have more than three (3) black spots on the skin, none of which can be larger than 2 inches in diameter

Hampshire

• Must possess Hampshire breed characteristics
• Ears must be erect and not rounded
• Must be black in color with a white belt starting on the front leg.
• The belt may be partially or totally encircling the body
• Must NOT have any white hair or indications of streaking on the forehead
• Must not have any red hair

Hereford

• Must be red, light, or dark however, with a white head, ears, and 4 white legs
• Ears must be at least broke forward
• Hereford Market Animals shall be eligible with at least 50% of a white face, at least 50% red body, at least 2 white feet. This will be known as the 50-50-50 rule
• Reporting of belts and black spots in breeding animals off springs. Belts and black spots do appear occasionally. It is the job of the breeders and members to do their best to eliminate this from their herds.

Landrace

• Must be white in color and possess Landrace breed characteristics (ears must be down)
• Must NOT allow any color hair other than white
• Must NOT allow more than three (3) spots of skin pigmentation
• Must NOT allow any spot of skin pigmentation larger than one U.S. minted quarter
• Must have no evidence of an extra dewclaw.

Poland China

• Must possess Poland China breed characteristics
• Must be black with six (6) white points - face, feet, and tail - with an occasional splash of white on the body. A hog may not possess more than one (1) black leg and to be determined as a Poland China. Tail docking is permissible, eliminating that white point
• Must have ears down
• Must NOT have evidence of belt formation
• Cannot have any red or sandy hair and/or pigment
• Hogs that have weighted ear tags or evidence of such tampering are ineligible
• Must NOT have any colored hair, other than white or black
• Must NOT have any red or blue colored skin pigmentation larger than a silver dollar
• Must NOT have masking above the eyes larger than a silver dollar
• Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such tags are determined to be not permissible and are grounds for disqualification.

Spot

• Must possess Spot breed characteristics
• Must be black and white in color
• Ears must be down and reasonably sized
• Any red tinted or sandy brown spots are ineligible
• No solid black head from ears forward
• No distinct white belt pattern - hair or skin - encircling and extending down and onto each shoulder
• Any signs of weighted ear tags or evidence of past existence of such tags arc determined to be not permissible and arc grounds for disqualification.

Yorkshire

• Must be white in color and possess Yorkshire breed characteristics
• Ears must be erect
• Must NOT have any colored hair, other than white
• Must NOT have colored skin pigmentation larger than a silver dollar
• Must NOT have masking above the eyes larger than a silver dollar
